World Press Photo 2014

This year the competition received 98,671 entries from 5,754 photographers from 132 countries. The jury gave prizes in nine themed categories to 53 photographers of 25 nationalities from: Argentina, Australia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Bulgaria, China, Czech Republic, El Salvador, Finland, France, Germany, Iran, Italy, Jordan, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Russia, Serbia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, the UK and the USA.

According to the guidelines of World Press Photo, the photographs being awarded are not only a summation of the previous year in photo-journalism but also deal with subject matter, a situation or event which has great journalistic significance and, at the same time show exceptional achievement in the areas of visual perception and creativity.

People who fled from the conflict in Syria have built a temporary domicile in a school sport hall in Sofia, Bulgaria. The number of Syrian refugees seeking asylum at the Turkish border onward to Bulgaria has drastically increased in 2013. At least 8,000 people come from Syria and Afghanistan. Bulgaria however is one of the poorest countries in the European Union and cannot quite cope with the influx of the situation. The country is struggling to provide necessary water, heating facilities, food, and medical services. Currently, there are about 2.4 million Syrian refugees waiting for asylum but only 18,000 places are available.

Since the beginning of the current regime in 2006, at least 60,000 people have fallen victims to drug cartels-related murders.

These wild cats are still hard to find; they are protected species in California and Florida but popular hunting prey in 13 states. The population of cougars will depend on the local people's tolerance and strategies in dealing with the animals.
