World Press Photo 2014

This year the competition received 98,671 entries from 5,754 photographers from 132 countries. The jury gave prizes in nine themed categories to 53 photographers of 25 nationalities from: Argentina, Australia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Bulgaria, China, Czech Republic, El Salvador, Finland, France, Germany, Iran, Italy, Jordan, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Russia, Serbia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, the UK and the USA.

According to the guidelines of World Press Photo, the photographs being awarded are not only a summation of the previous year in photo-journalism but also deal with subject matter, a situation or event which has great journalistic significance and, at the same time show exceptional achievement in the areas of visual perception and creativity.

Djibouti is one of the most frequently used port of Spain by refugees fleeing from Somalia, Eritrea and Ethiopia seeking a better life in Europe and the Middle East.

People who fled from the conflict in Syria have built a temporary domicile in a school sport hall in Sofia, Bulgaria. The number of Syrian refugees seeking asylum at the Turkish border onward to Bulgaria has drastically increased in 2013. At least 8,000 people come from Syria and Afghanistan. Bulgaria however is one of the poorest countries in the European Union and cannot quite cope with the influx of the situation. The country is struggling to provide necessary water, heating facilities, food, and medical services. Currently, there are about 2.4 million Syrian refugees waiting for asylum but only 18,000 places are available.
World Press Photo 14 3rd prize winner © Taslima Akhter, Bangladesh. On the day the Rana Plaza building collapsed in Sabhar, Bangladesh, still unknown number of people who were inside this textile factory fell victim. The nature of the relationship between these two people in this photo is not known. Some 800 corpses were found in this tragic site, making this tragedy the largest industrial accident in history.

Over four million islanders have escaped to Maila and other cities, as nearly half of the island's houses and instrastructure were destroyed.

On the 21st of September, four masked men opened fire at shoppers and held them hostage for four days at Westgate Shopping Mall in Nairobi, Kenya. during the four day terror, at least 60 people died of starvation and at least 200 were injured. The four terrorists were belonged to Somalian jihadists group called Al-Shabaab. This mother with two children hid and came out uninjured.

In Mexico, many competing organised criminal drug cartels use such explicit ways as a way of sending [threatening] messages to each other. Since the beginning of the current regime in 2006, at least 60,000 people have fallen victims to drug cartels-related murders.

Maggie (19) lives her two children Kayden (4) and Memphis (2) in Central Ohio. Her new boyfriend of some months Shane (31) has an addiction problem and spent much of his life behind bars. A neighbour intervened and called the police. Shane was arrested for domestic violence.

Kachin rebellion is only one of the many ethnic clashes in Burma, where military junta has been ruling the country for the past 40 years.

Often victims can be identified by the clothes they were wearing and the date of death. This picture is a remain of a 17 or 18 year old female found on the sugar plantation in Apopa.
