Building and theatre were at the centre of the Bauhaus concept that Paul Klee introduced in 1922, including dance, music, theatre, pantomime, performance, space, light and sound experience. The Bauhaus stage, with its associated Bauhaus celebrations and the Bauhaus band and stage construction, became an important training ground for teamwork and the new working and living community at the Bauhaus, a living vision of Gesamtkunstwerk, the unified work of art.

Oskar Schlemmer took over the theatre workshop and led it until 1929. As early as 1921 he had begun working on his Triadic Ballet, which premiered in Stuttgart in 1922.
