M.F. Husain - Chronicler of Everyday in India
& collect
Maqbool Fida Husain(1915-2011), also widely known as 'Picasso of India, was one of India’s most eminent and prolific artists. He was born in Pandharpur, a city near Bhima River, but spent his early years in Indore. Husain began his career as a painter of cinema hoardings after attending art school in Mumbai. The paintings shown here are selections from his 'Indian Civilization' series, a very ambitious project composed of 8 triptych paintings on 96 panels. Husain was working on this series until his death in 2011. Using freehand drawing and vibrant colour, he depicted Indian subject matter - from religions and history to everyday scenes of festivals, household and urban life - in the styles of European paintings. M.F. Husain: Master of Modern Indian Painting exhibition is on view at Victoria & Albert Museum, London until July 27th, 2014. Images courtesy: Victoria & Albert Museum.
